48 Alabama Counties to Receive Expanded High-Speed Internet Service, Connecting Rural Communities Like Never Before – Compsmag

Alabama Counties to See Expansion in High-Speed Internet

It is suggested that, Governor Kay Ivey recently announced the awarding of $148.3 million in grants to expand high-speed internet to unserved areas across Alabama. This initiative will benefit 48 counties and create more than 5,000 miles of broadband infrastructure.

Last Mile Projects

The expansion projects, known as the “last mile” projects, aim to bring high-speed internet access to almost 54,000 households, businesses, and institutions. These efforts are part of a larger plan to achieve full broadband access for all residents in Alabama.

Middle Mile Program

Prior to this announcement, $188 million in grants were awarded for the Alabama Anchor Institution program, also known as the “middle mile” program. This initiative funded internet service providers to install over 4,000 miles of broadband infrastructure throughout the state.
