New Funding and Technical Assistance Program Supports Collaboration for Forest Stewardship in Forests and Communities

The National Forest Foundation has received a million grant from the USDA Forest Service to launch the Collaborative Capacity Program for Forests & Communities. This program aims to bring together different perspectives to address complex forest management challenges such as climate change, extreme wildfires, and biodiversity loss.

Collaboration is essential for sustainable forest restoration, recreation, wildfire resilience, and co-stewardship with Tribal Nations. The Collaborative Capacity Program focuses on strategic planning, relationship building, and communication among partners to support communities, collaborative groups, and Tribal Nations nationwide.

The program was developed with input from an Advisory Committee with diverse experience in rural capacity building, Tribal co-stewardship, outdoor recreation, and collaborative conservation. Sarah Di Vittorio, Conservation Connect Director at the National Forest Foundation, emphasizes the importance of working together to achieve shared goals for healthy forests, recreational opportunities, resilient communities, and strong local economies.

The Collaborative Capacity Program prioritizes Tribal Nations and underserved communities, ensuring meaningful involvement and addressing historical inequities. Financial awards will be prioritized for applicants demonstrating a financial need, with a specific funding pathway designated for federally recognized Tribal Nations.

Chief Moore of the USDA Forest Service highlights the importance of equity in decision-making processes and engagement opportunities, especially for Tribal Nations and underserved populations. The program’s Request for Proposals for financial awards is open until July 12, 2024, with more information available on the program’s webpage.

The NFF encourages individuals to get involved in caring for the public lands that make up the National Forest System through fieldwork, grant programs, and responsible recreation. For more information on the Collaborative Capacity Program and upcoming webinars, visit the NFF website.
