“These problems cannot be solved by government alone”

The housing system in Australia has long been a concern, with various inquiries and government strategies failing to bring about significant change. Efforts from different levels of government have not addressed the root of the issue, leading to calls for further action. The recent announcement by the Albanese government of a .3 billion investment to build more homes for Australians is a positive step, but may not be enough to accelerate the delivery of new social and affordable housing.

The establishment of the Housing Australia Future Fund and the National Housing Accord, aiming to deliver 40,000 social and affordable homes over five years, is a positive development. However, more funding and faster delivery are needed to address the pressing housing crisis. PowerHousing Australia has already received applications for 26,000 homes in the first round of the HAFF, showing the demand for social and affordable housing solutions.

To meet the challenge of building more homes quickly and in desired locations, the Albanese government should consider increasing funding for social and affordable housing in the upcoming budget. Committing to funding for 20,000 to 30,000 homes this year could help address the urgent need for housing solutions. Doubling the size of the HAFF to billion would provide a solid foundation for future housing requirements, ensuring a sustainable approach to the housing crisis.

It is evident that significant reform and investment are needed in Australia’s housing system to address the challenges faced by many in finding suitable and affordable housing. While government initiatives are steps in the right direction, a more comprehensive and accelerated approach is necessary. By increasing funding and committing to a larger number of homes, the government can proactively address the housing crisis and improve the lives of many Australians.

With housing prices on the rise and affordable options dwindling, urgent action is vital to provide safe and secure housing for all Australians. By committing to a larger investment and speeding up the delivery of social and affordable housing, the Albanese government can make a significant impact and enhance the housing system. It is time to move beyond inquiries and take tangible steps towards building a more sustainable and inclusive housing system for all.
