Installation of 22 fast-charging stations planned for Ohio interstates, state and U.S. routes.

Ohio has allocated almost million to establish 22 new electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging stations along interstates, state routes, and U.S. routes. This funding is part of the second round of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program, with Ohio being the first state to activate a NEVI charging station under this initiative.

Governor Mike DeWine expressed the importance of building the necessary infrastructure to accommodate the growing number of electric cars on Ohio roadways. The second round of NEVI funding will support EV chargers on various routes such as I-270, I-275, I-675, I-680, I-71, I-76, I-77, SR 15, U.S. 23, U.S. 30, and U.S. 33.

Private companies like Electric Era, Francis Energy Charging, Jule, Love’s Travel Stops, Meijer, Red E Charging, Sheetz, EVgo, and United Dairy Farmers will match the million NEVI funding with over million to install and operate the EV charging stations. The selected proposals include sites at shopping centers, grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, hotels, and even a bowling alley.

ODOT Director Jack Marchbanks emphasized that Ohio is leading transportation innovation with these developments. The goal is to have fast chargers located every 50 miles across the state, ensuring that each station is within a mile of the freeway and includes four charger ports capable of delivering at least 150 kilowatts of power per port. Additionally, these stations will offer amenities such as restrooms and food and beverage options.

DriveOhio, a division of the Ohio Department of Transportation, oversees Ohio’s NEVI program, with Executive Director Gabe Klein praising Ohio’s efforts to promote electric transportation. The first round of EV charger locations was announced in July 2023, with the first NEVI station opening along I-70 at U.S. 42 in Madison County in December 2023.

Construction of the second round of NEVI stations is scheduled to commence in late 2024 and 2025, according to DriveOhio. Ohio’s commitment to expanding EV infrastructure showcases its dedication to a greener and more sustainable future.
