Contract Awarded for Improvements to Red Line

Contract Awarded for Improvements to Red Line

Skanska, a renowned global construction and development firm, has recently secured a million contract from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) to undertake extensive track upgrades on the MBTA Red Line. This project involves a series of six 24/7 track outages scheduled for 2024.

Rob Pine, the vice president of operations for Skanska USA Civil’s New England region, expressed enthusiasm for the ongoing collaboration with the MBTA. Pine stated, “We’re excited to further our partnership with the MBTA through this new initiative on the Red Line. The enhancements we will make are crucial for improving Boston’s busiest subway route, which is a vital part of daily commutes for residents across the city.”

The scope of the project encompasses the replacement of ties, rail, and restrained rail across straight sections, curves, and restrained curves. Additionally, the project includes the removal and replacement of damaged spike plates with pandrol plates, insulators, and C-Bonds, as well as the replacement of contact rail and ballast. Joint elimination will be carried out through thermite welding, and repairs to direct fixation and floating slabs – including concrete repairs and replacement, surface line and tamping, and track stabilization – are also part of the plan.

Construction on the project kicked off this year. For more details, interested parties can visit Skanska’s website at www.skanska.com.
