Space Force moves closer to implementing classified remote work

A new prototype called the Enigma Project is set to revolutionize the way guardians handle their classified work from home. Developed by GDIT, this digital environment allows users from various sectors to access both classified and unclassified information from a single device.

Travis Dawson, the director of Enigma, revealed that they have successfully implemented the Commercial Solutions for Classified (CSFC) on a single device, eliminating the need to physically move in and out of secure locations. Space Systems Command awarded GDIT million to develop this digital environment, with plans to extend the agreement until January 2025 to incorporate more commercial cloud environments capable of handling secret-level data.

Enigma is designed to be a collaborative environment across various security classifications, facilitating application onboarding, integration, and support services for third-party applications. Despite the excitement surrounding this portable secret-work capable computer, users must adhere to strict guidelines, such as working in a closed space without distractions.

While Enigma’s technology is not new and has been sanctioned by the National Security Agency, its potential impact is significant. The uptake of secure capabilities to handle classified information has been slower compared to the widespread adoption of remote unclassified work during the COVID-19 pandemic. The cloud-based prototype aims to overcome limitations of existing infrastructure and reduce dependency on defense circuits for reliability.

GDIT may explore increasing the classification levels and partnering with more cloud providers in the future. Although there is a desire for Enigma to eventually support top secret and special access program level information, the focus remains on meeting current government requirements.
