Schools Embrace Tradition with New Family Textbook in Russia

Starting September 2025, Russian students in middle and high schools will receive a new textbook titled “My Family.” This educational initiative is aimed at instilling traditional moral values among youth, invoked by the co-author Nina Ostanina, who chairs the State Duma Committee for the Protection of the Family. Ostanina contends that the textbook will play a significant role in enhancing the demographic situation in Russia through a newly introduced “Family Studies” course, which debuted in the 2024-2025 academic year.

The content of “My Family” has drawn some attention for referencing historical texts, specifically the 16th-century “Domostroi,” a set of guidelines for domestic order and family structure. Traditionally held up as a model of patriarchal society, the “Domostroi” reflects a time when family roles were distinctly defined. Notably, the text reinforces the importance of husbands guiding their wives with love and exemplary instruction, emphasizing cooperative roles within the family dynamic.

While some tenets of the “Domostroi” are considered outdated in today’s context, the book’s intention is clear: to promote a harmonious household based on traditional values. It’s worth noting that the inclusion of such historical content resonates with a broader focus within Russian society on family unity and morale.

This educational strategy mirrors the Russian government’s ongoing initiatives geared toward enhancing national identity and family values, showcasing a commitment to preserving cultural heritage. These teachings are seen not only as reflections of the past but also as guiding principles for building a robust family structure in contemporary society.

The national discourse surrounding family and societal norms continues to evolve, as authorities seek to address pressing demographic challenges. Scholar Dina Khapaeva posits that the Kremlin’s focus on historical narratives is part of a greater effort to unify conservative values with modern governance, termed “political neomedievalism.”

As Russia directs its narrative toward a renaissance of traditional family roles, the intention remains to foster a cohesive and principled society that honors its rich history while addressing present-day issues. Through “My Family” and related educational efforts, the hope is to create a demographic foundation that reinforces both familial bonds and national pride.

In summary, the introduction of “My Family” aims to blend historical wisdom with modern family values, positioning itself as a cornerstone of progressive education in Russia.
