Game On: What Foreign Policy Can Learn from the Strategic Brilliance of a Fortnite Champion!

Exploring International Relations Through Gaming: A Unique Perspective on Popular Titles

In today’s popular culture, video games are not just a source of entertainment; they serve as intriguing gateways to understanding complex subjects like international relations. One shining example is the recently launched video game, Civilization VII, which showcases historical figures like Charlemagne in a new light. In this game, players find themselves in an imagined scenario where Charlemagne takes control of modern-day America and considers expansion into neighboring lands, drawing connections between perceived historical roles and contemporary conflicts.

As a passionate gamer and a professor of international relations, I find the educational aspects of such games compelling. According to recent reports from USAZINE, approximately 190.6 million people in the U.S. engage with video games, transcending traditional leisure activities. Many gamers share a common goal: to enjoy and learn. This dual purpose is evident in my recent publication, The Gamer’s Guide to International Relations, where I delve into how popular games lay out lessons on diplomacy and the interactions between various nations.

Fortnite, League of Legends, and Minecraft—all have unique ways of mirroring real-world diplomatic interactions, revealing deeper truths about international relations theories. For instance, in Fortnite, players must navigate an anarchic environment, echoing key tenets of realpolitik, where survival is paramount. Just as nations strategize for self-preservation, so do players find themselves at the crossroads of cooperation and competition, learning that allegiances can shift rapidly.

Similarly, League of Legends teaches invaluable lessons about teamwork and the importance of long-lasting alliances—reflecting the liberalism theory of international relations. Players collaborate to achieve specific goals, recognizing that enduring partnerships can yield mutual benefits beyond initial accomplishments. This theory is perfectly embodied by the historical alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom during global conflicts, leading to decades of cooperation and shared progress.

On the other hand, Minecraft exemplifies constructivism, where players have the freedom to create their worlds. The game showcases how nations can come together to form alliances or treaties that shape their future, emphasizing that international relations are largely defined by collective agreements and socially constructed norms.

In summarizing, video games like Civilization VII, Fortnite, League of Legends, and Minecraft serve as more than mere entertainment; they provide a playful yet profound insight into the fabric of international relations. By engaging with these games, players can grasp complex theories in an accessible manner, turning what may seem like simple pastimes into lessons that matter in our interconnected world.
