Escalating Conflict in Sudan: Regional Diplomacy as the Key to Ending Foreign Influences and Restoring Peace

The Ongoing Crisis in Sudan: A Call for Regional and International Solidarity

Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, marking one of the most devastating humanitarian crises in recent history. The United Nations estimates that over 150,000 lives have been lost, and more than 14 million people have been displaced, with a significant number seeking refuge in neighboring countries like Chad, Ethiopia, and South Sudan. Once a dynamic and lively capital, Khartoum now stands as a testament to destruction, often being described as a “burnt-out shell.”

This tumultuous war is deeply rooted in longstanding ethnic, political, and economic dynamics, compounded by the roles played by local and international actors. Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, have critically noted that the global response to this crisis has been insufficient, leaving many Sudanese citizens vulnerable.

Just as in previous conflicts, external influences have complicated the situation, with more than ten countries across Africa and the Middle East drawn into what is now a complex proxy war. Nations such as Egypt, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia have vested interests in the outcome. While Saudi Arabia stands in support of the Sudanese army, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is believed to have ties with the Rapid Support Forces.

In this intricate geopolitical backdrop, it’s essential to acknowledge the positive roles these regional players can play. For example, Saudi Arabia’s involvement could potentially be refocused towards humanitarian assistance and peace negotiations rather than military support. The UAE has previously demonstrated a commitment to mediating conflicts, having aided Sudan in resolving a border dispute with Chad years ago.

To pave the way for peace, an urgent call for regional diplomacy has been made. The African Union must step forward, asserting its role in facilitating peace talks and ensuring that any ceasefire is upheld. This organization has the tools at its disposal to collaborate with various international entities, including the Arab League, to maintain a unified approach that prioritizes the well-being of the Sudanese people.

As leaders and organizations respond to this crisis, it is crucial to actively involve the Sudanese populace in envisioning their future. The international community can support this by providing resources aimed at fostering democratic governance, ensuring humanitarian aid reaches those in need, and enabling the establishment of resilient institutions.

Moreover, peace in Sudan would not only signify a crucial step for the African continent but could resonate globally, contributing to stability in the surrounding regions. It’s time for all actors—local, regional, and international—to coalesce with a genuine commitment to ending the suffering in Sudan and building a future defined by democracy and sustainable development.
