Nestled in the hills of Silver Lake, Los Angeles, is a stunning home that has undergone a remarkable transformation. Originally purchased by production designer James Chinlund and artist Clare Crespo 17 years ago, this once nondescript house has been reimagined into a space that reflects their unique sensibilities and takes full advantage of the breathtaking views that surround it.
Architect Alan Koch and designer Karen Spector of Lovers Unite were enlisted for the renovation, which included a series of carefully planned architectural interventions and material shifts. The result is a home that seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor living, creating a space that is both inviting and visually stunning.
One of the standout features of the renovation is the incorporation of an outdoor balcony into the interior space, which now serves as a social area and dining room. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the sweeping views of Silver Lake, while reclaimed Douglas fir slats on the ceiling add a touch of Japanese-inspired charm.
The kitchen, once closed-off and tight, now opens up to the dining area, featuring custom cabinets with Douglas fir veneer and Vermont slate countertops. The overall color palette of the house is natural yet colorful, with custom copper stove hoods and cork floors adding to the warmth and charm of the space.
The exterior of the home features wooden panels that hint at the craftsmanship found inside, while lush landscaping and a pavilion in the backyard provide a serene retreat. The lower level of the home offers additional space for entertaining, with unique design elements like an original slatted screen designed by Chinlund.
After nearly two decades of planning and renovation, Chinlund and Crespo’s home is a testament to patience and dedication. This project showcases the beauty that can be achieved when design and craftsmanship come together in perfect harmony.
