Advanced Digital Engineering Facility by Lockheed Skunk Works Now Open in California

Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works digital transformation team has unveiled a cutting-edge visualization engineering facility in Palmdale, California. This facility will serve as a virtual environment for advancing engineering development. The team has launched a Virtual Engineering Environment equipped with computer-aided software and tools, as well as a large format PowerWall display system. These resources will allow engineers to design, manufacture, and test systems and processes virtually.

The Virtual Engineering Environment supports a variety of digitally enabled techniques, including virtual, augmented, and mixed reality, modeling and simulation, interactive digital twins, motion capture, and real-time photo-realistic rendering. According to Marc O’Brien, senior manager of the Virtual Prototyping group, these digital and virtual technologies are part of Lockheed’s 1LMX transformation. The 1LMX initiative aims to leverage automation, robotics, and factory simulations to increase production capacity while maintaining operational efficiency.

By utilizing these advanced technologies, Lockheed Martin’s engineers can make informed decisions that reduce costs, support delivery schedules, mitigate risks, and improve overall quality. This strategic investment in digital transformation will undoubtedly enhance Lockheed’s engineering capabilities and drive innovation within the company.
