Queensland Moves Forward with Largest Stanwell Tesla Battery Project in the State

The state Labor administration of Queensland is making significant strides in its efforts to transition to renewable energy sources with the announcement of a major expansion to the Stanwell battery project. Originally planned to have a two-hour capacity of 150 MW and 300 MWh, the battery will now have a four-hour capacity, making it the largest committed battery project in the state.

The Stanwell battery, to be constructed next to the current coal-fired power generators near Rockhampton, will be built by Tesla using its Megapack technology. The project will come at an increased cost of 8.2 million, bringing the total cost to 7 million. Construction is set to begin this month, with the battery expected to be operational by mid-2027. This expansion is part of a new clean energy hub being developed in the location, which will also feature a pilot project utilizing cutting-edge iron flow battery technology and green hydrogen.

Queensland is pushing forward with several large battery projects as it aims to increase the proportion of renewable energy sources in its predominantly coal-based system. With the state currently only at a 27% share of renewable energy, well below the legally mandated target of 80% by 2035, initiatives like the Stanwell battery project are crucial in achieving these goals.

In addition to the Stanwell battery, the state-owned generators are working on other battery projects, including the 300 MW, 600 MWh battery next to the Tarong coal-fired power plant. Projects such as the Greenbank batteries, Swanbank battery, and the recently completed Chinchilla battery are all contributing to the state’s renewable energy transition.

Currently, two batteries in Queensland are operational, with more in the pipeline, including Neoen’s Western Downs battery near a large solar farm and Akyasha Energy’s Brendale battery. These developments signify Queensland’s commitment to embracing renewable energy and reducing its reliance on fossil fuels.
