Conflict Could Propel Iran’s Nuclear Ambitions Underground: Lessons from North Korea’s Strategy

Tensions Rise as U.S. and Israel Strike Iran: What’s Next for Global Nonproliferation?

The recent strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran have raised significant concerns globally—not only due to the dubious legal grounds cited by both governments but also for the potentially far-reaching consequences on international security. These military actions could inadvertently strengthen Iran’s resolve to pursue nuclear capabilities, a move that might drastically alter the geopolitical landscape.

If Iran follows through on threats to withdraw from the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), it could inflict severe damage on the efficacy of the global nuclear nonproliferation framework. Amid a series of international security challenges, this development may represent one of the most critical situations to date.

Understanding the NPT’s Successes and Vulnerabilities

In May 2015, I attended the five-year review conference of the NPT, where heated debates among delegates ultimately ended without any resolutions. Measures calling for Israel’s attendance at future disarmament conferences were hampered by delegations from the U.S., UK, and Canada. These actions suggest a lack of commitment to a treaty designed to curb nuclear proliferation and ensure disarmament.

Interestingly, when the NPT was adopted in 1968, it allowed the five original nuclear-armed states—namely the U.S., Soviet Union, France, UK, and China—to maintain their arsenals while obligating other nations to refrain from pursuing nuclear weapons. Despite being a resilient document overall, the NPT’s integrity is increasingly under question due to the apparent failure of existing nuclear states to fulfill their disarmament commitments.

The relationship between Russia and the NPT has also been strained. In 2022, Russia blocked consensus at a review conference because of disagreements regarding its occupation of power facilities in Ukraine, adding further instability to the treaty’s future.

Possible Consequences of Unconventional Actions

Following the U.S. and Israeli strikes, Iran has stated that such military actions directly undermine the credibility of bodies like the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which should serve as a neutral arbiter in nuclear discussions. In retaliation, Iran has escalated its military activities, including missile strikes against Israeli and U.S. bases, and signaled intentions to suspend its commitments to the IAEA.

Despite the reality of the situation, it’s important to acknowledge the complex motivations that might drive Iran’s nuclear ambitions. While Iran’s support for various groups in the region may raise eyebrows, analysts argue that this behavior stems from a desire for deterrence rather than outright aggression.

Reports suggest that Iran might consider closer ties with regional partners to strengthen its security posture, especially when faced with heightened military threats. Countries like Saudi Arabia, who already face their security concerns, may need to reevaluate their nuclear strategies in response to Iran’s potential moves.

A Call for Diplomatic Solutions

Amid all this turmoil, there remains a glimmer of hope for diplomacy. Previous strains in U.S.-Iran relations have shown that constructive engagement can yield results. Should diplomatic channels reopen, there may still be possibilities to encourage Iran’s compliance with the IAEA and convince the nation to abandon its nuclear aspirations.

However, if the current military campaign persists, it is likely that any hope for renewed diplomatic relations could be lost for years—perhaps even decades—resulting in irreparable damage to the global nonproliferation regime.

In these uncertain times, global actors and agencies must advocate for dialogue over conflict to ensure a peaceful resolution. As complexities unfold, it is crucial to stay informed and engaged in discussions surrounding nuclear nonproliferation, regional stability, and international cooperation.
