Journalist Humberto Padgett Faces Harassment Amidst Coverage of Environmental Issues in Mexico
In a striking example of the challenges faced by journalists in Mexico, investigative reporter Humberto Padgett was recently targeted by armed assailants while covering the ongoing effects of drought in the rural area of Cuitzeo. On September 13, 2024, Padgett’s vehicle was intercepted by armed men who not only stole his car and personal identification but also his work equipment, including essential gear like bullet-proof jackets. This terrifying experience has led Padgett to announce his indefinite retirement from journalism.
Padgett’s poignant farewell came just two days later, stating via Twitter, “Today I’m leaving journalism indefinitely. The losses I’ve suffered, the harassment and threats my family and I have endured, and the neglect I’ve faced have forced me to give up after 26 years of work. Thank you and good luck.” His departure from Radio Fórmula reflects a broader issue that many journalists face in Mexico, where reporting on sensitive matters often comes at a high cost.
Despite being part of a government protection scheme designed to safeguard journalists and human rights defenders, the threats have persisted. The Protection Mechanism for Journalists and Human Rights Defenders, established in 2012, aims to provide various security measures, including police protections, bodyguards, and emergency alerts. However, these measures have, unfortunately, been insufficient.
Padgett’s experience is not unique; other journalists in Latin America, such as Honduran reporter Wendy Funes, have also faced intimidation when tackling stories connected to powerful and often dangerous individuals. Funes, who runs the online news platform RI, received police protection after being threatened while covering an extortion trial linked to an international criminal gang. Both Padgett and Funes represent the determination of a new generation of journalists stepping into harm’s way to expose corruption and injustice, and their experiences highlight the urgent need for more effective protective measures for media professionals worldwide.
