Gemini Nano Integration in Mid-range Phones with Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 SoC

Qualcomm recently unveiled its mid-tier Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 SoC, following the introduction of the flagship-tier Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 processor. The new Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 chip is designed for upper mid-range and premium Android devices, offering on-device AI capabilities with support for various LLMs (Large Language Models) and faster Wi-Fi 7 connectivity.

One of the key features of the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 is its emphasis on AI and connectivity. Qualcomm claims that the chip delivers 60 percent better performance per watt in AI processing compared to its predecessor. It also provides compatibility with a wide range of chatbots and LLMs, including Google’s Gemini Nano and Llama 2.

The updated ISP in the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 enables better semantic segmentation in identifying objects and faces, even in low light conditions. This enhancement improves visual assistance using AI technology.

On the connectivity front, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 is the first in its line to support Wi-Fi 7 through the FastConnect 7800 controller. It also features a Snapdragon X63 5G modem compatible with 5G versions under 3GGP’s Release 17, offering download speeds of up to 4.2 Gbps.

In terms of performance, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 is built on a 4 nm node and boasts a 5 percent improvement in efficiency over its predecessor. It features an octa-core processor with a Cortex-X4 primary core clocked up to 2.8 GHz. The overall CPU performance is 15 percent faster, while the Adreno GPU delivers 45 percent better graphics power.

The chip supports up to 24 GB LPDDR5X of RAM and UFS 4.0 storage, and can run on displays with variable refresh rates between 1 and 240 Hz. The OnePlus Ace 3V is the first smartphone to feature the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 chip, expected to be rebranded as the OnePlus Nord 4 outside China.

With the inclusion of on-device AI capabilities, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 chip raises the question of whether this feature will influence consumers’ smartphone preferences. Share your thoughts on on-device AI in the comments section.
