‘Greenhouse Emission Increase for Tesla in 2023 Despite Net-Zero Goals’

Tesla’s recent impact report revealed that the company’s greenhouse gas emissions have surged by nearly 10 million metric tons of CO2 in 2023. This increase highlights the automotive company’s role in contributing to pollution, with over 50 million metric tons of CO2 being released that year, a significant jump from the previous year’s record of 42 million metric tons.

Despite Tesla’s reputation for promoting electric vehicles, its operations, especially in the supply chain, have been a major source of pollution. In fact, nearly 80 percent of the company’s overall carbon footprint comes from its goods and services.

Recently, Tesla has faced legal action from environmental groups and counties in California for allegedly not complying with environmental regulations, including mishandling hazardous waste materials at its Fremont factory. The company’s efforts to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions seem challenging, as its supply chain emissions have worsened over the past year.

Tesla has outlined plans to address climate risks and reduce its carbon footprint, focusing on areas such as climate risk management, water use, responsible AI usage, and the health and safety of workers. Under new SEC rules, companies like Tesla are required to disclose their indirect emissions from supply chains and product usage.

Despite the setbacks, Tesla remains committed to its goal of achieving net-zero emissions “as soon as possible.” However, the recent data suggests that there is still a long way to go before the company reaches its sustainability targets.
