Historical Community Garden in Steilacoom

The Steilacoom Historical Community Garden is excited to announce that for the first time ever, they will be opening their gates to the public at 2402 B St. in Cherrydale Park. This event will take place on Saturday, June 8 from 10 a.m. to noon, inviting the entire community to come and see the garden and learn more about their mission.

Mayor Dick Muri will be present to kick off the event by cutting a “Rainbow Carrots” seed tape at the garden gate entrance. Attendees will have the opportunity to tour the garden, relax on the patio gathering space, and learn about the various initiatives of the garden.

The SHCG boasts a total of 30 raised garden beds, including some dedicated to supporting Steilacoom Historical School District students. Additionally, there are six heirlooms-only beds within the Settlers’ Kitchen Garden – a nod to what the founders of Steilacoom may have grown in the 1850s. The Steilacoom Tribe is also caring for an extensive edible and medicinal native plant demonstration garden to educate visitors on the cultural significance of plants.

This community event is open to all, and the garden is actively seeking individuals to become Friends of the Garden – no gardening experience required. For more information, please contact SHCG coordinator, Carol Saynisch. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to connect with your neighbors and support a great cause.
