Hydrogen-Powered Excavation in Gothenburg Port

Hydrogen-Powered Excavation in Gothenburg Port

The Port of Gothenburg recently completed one of its largest infrastructure projects ever by utilizing a hydrogen generator with innovative technology to carry out emission-free excavation work. The generator, provided by Hitachi Energy’s technology partner PowerCell Group, is a scalable and portable solution that features fuel cell modules, power electronics, cooling, auxiliary systems, and an intelligent control system.

Pilot tests of the hydrogen generator took place at the new terminal area, Arendal 2, within the Port of Gothenburg. Green hydrogen from Linde Gas powered the generator to generate electricity for a charging station on-site, which in turn supplies electricity to an electric excavator from Volvo. This electric excavator is being used for a major infrastructure project creating 140,000 square metres of new terminal area in the outer areas of the port.

Arendal 2 represents the largest terminal development project in the Port of Gothenburg since the 1970s. The project utilizes techniques such as stabilisation and solidification of contaminated dredged material, developed during the project’s early stages in 2016.

David Norén, Project Manager for Arendal 2 at the Gothenburg Port Authority, expressed excitement over testing the facility in a project that prioritizes collaboration, sustainability, and innovative solutions. The overall goal of the Port of Gothenburg is to reduce port-related CO2 emissions by 70%, extending from Vinga out to sea to the entire Gothenburg area on land.

Hydrogen has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in various areas within the port, according to Viktor Allgurén, Innovation Manager at the Gothenburg Port Authority. Allgurén highlighted the versatility of hydrogen as a fuel for trucks, trains, handling equipment, ship propulsion, and supporting the power grid when ships are connected to shore power.

In related news, the EU Commission recently approved the Skandia Gateway project, allowing for the deepening of the fairway at the Port of Gothenburg. Additionally, APM Terminals (APMT) Gothenburg welcomed the launch of a new weekly MSC route to the US and South America earlier this month, further showcasing the port’s growth and connectivity.
