Huntsman Cancer Institute Receives Million for Cancer Research Building

The Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah has been granted million from the Utah Legislature for a new cancer research and academic building in Utah County. This initiative is part of the institute’s strategy to establish a second comprehensive cancer center in Utah, aiming to bring cancer research and care closer to the local communities.

Following the announcement of a million lead matching gift from the Huntsman Foundation in June 2023, progress on the project has been steady. Earlier this year, Flagship Companies and Woodbury Corporation donated 20 acres of land for the campus. Collaborations with Utah Valley University and Brigham Young University have already begun, along with securing additional philanthropic support and programmatic investments.

Mary Beckerle, PhD, CEO of Huntsman Cancer Institute, expressed her vision for a cancer-free future, emphasizing the importance of the new campus in advancing research, training healthcare professionals, and providing cutting-edge cancer care to communities across the state. University of Utah President, Taylor Randall, also voiced his support for the project, highlighting its potential to offer hope to those affected by cancer in Utah.

Throughout the 2024 legislative session, Huntsman Cancer Institute garnered widespread support from various stakeholders, including patients, scientists, medical professionals, and academic leaders from other universities in the state. Peter Huntsman, chairman and CEO of Huntsman Cancer Foundation, reassured legislators of the project’s long-term impact on saving lives and enhancing the state’s position as a global leader in cancer research.

The groundbreaking for the research center in Vineyard is expected to take place in late 2024, marking a significant step forward in Huntsman Cancer Institute’s mission to combat cancer and improve healthcare outcomes in Utah.
