Nearly one in five plan bigger grocery spend in 2024

With New Year’s resolutions fresh on their minds, consumers are planning to spend more money on groceries and less on eating at restaurants in 2024, according to a new report by 84.51°, Kroger’s in-house data firm.

Their January Consumer Digest report shows that more than half (58%) of shoppers have set spending goals or resolutions for the year, with many aiming to reduce their discretionary spending. 

Nearly one in five (19%) respondents to the 84.51° survey said they plan to spend more on groceries over the next 12 months, and 53% said they’re going to beef up their contributions to savings and investments. 

Meanwhile, 57% said they plan to spend less this year on dining out, carry out, and food delivery services. 

Shoppers also aim to get healthier this year with 58% saying they plan to follow a diet. Nearly a third (32%) of respondents said they were unfamiliar with the popular GLP-1 prescription weight loss drugs Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, and 44% said they have no interest in using them to lose weight.
