Brittany Ferries Explores Zero-Emissions Vessel Design

On June 6, 2024, Riviera News reported that Brittany Ferries has entered into a partnership with a vessel designer and engine manufacturer to develop designs and technical specifications for a zero-emissions craft. This tripartite deal aims to leverage the strengths of each partner, combining expertise in fast craft design, engineering, and fleet operation.

Christophe Mathieu, the chief executive of Brittany Ferries, emphasized the importance of this project in achieving the company’s goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050. While considering various options for achieving this goal, including all-electric solutions for shorter routes, the ferry operator has yet to finalize the most suitable approach or deployment route for these vessels. Mathieu highlighted the role of trusted partners in helping to shape the project and ensure a swift transition towards sustainable practices.

This initiative comes as Brittany Ferries nears the completion of its largest fleet renewal program in history. Wärtsilä, a key supplier for the company’s new ships, has provided LNG engines for vessels like Salamanca and Santona. The company is also installing LNG-hybrid drivetrains for upcoming hybrid vessels set to launch in Europe by the end of the year.

By 2025, five new ships will have joined Brittany Ferries’ fleet, including LNG-powered and shore-power-ready LNG-electric hybrids. Incat, a leading provider of battery electric propulsion and lightweight aluminum vessels, expressed its excitement to continue collaborating with Brittany Ferries and Wärtsilä in advancing sustainable maritime transport in Europe.

Brittany Ferries’ history of innovation in sustainable ferry travel, exemplified by its previous investment in LNG and hybrid ships, underscores its commitment to leading the industry towards a more environmentally friendly future. With a track record of implementing eco-friendly solutions, the company continues to pave the way for sustainable maritime transport in Europe.
