‘Photographer Amanda Large Captures Uno Prii’s Modernist Architecture in Toronto Apartment Buildings Over a Two-Year Period’

Uno Prii, an Estonian-Canadian architect known for his bold geometric designs, would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year. Prii left a lasting legacy in Toronto with his modernist apartment buildings in the 1960s and ’70s.

Photographer Amanda Large from doublespace photography captured the essence of Prii’s architectural achievements in a series of black and white photographs. Her images showcase ten of Prii’s Toronto apartment buildings, focusing on the interplay of light and forms.

Amanda’s careful selection of buildings and shooting conditions reflects her dedication to capturing the architectural beauty of Prii’s work. The photographs highlight intricate details like the swooping canopy entrance and balcony treatments, showcasing the unique design features of each building.

One of Amanda’s favorite shots from the series captures the play of light on the facade of 141 Erskine Ave. She intentionally chose a beautiful summer evening to showcase the building’s design elements, despite the challenge of mature trees obscuring the view.

This personal project by Amanda Large offers a glimpse into Uno Prii’s architectural masterpieces, celebrating his contribution to Toronto’s urban landscape. For more of Amanda’s stunning work, visit doublespace’s website and follow them on Instagram.

If you have a project that deserves recognition as the Project of the Week, submit it for consideration. Celebrate the legacy of iconic architects like Uno Prii and explore the beauty of modernist design through Amanda Large’s lens.
