Prototype Kuiper Satellites Set to Deorbit

Amazon has announced that it is initiating the process to actively deorbit its two Project Kuiper prototype satellites, almost eight months after their launch. The company stated on May 23 that it is entering the final phase of the prototype mission, showcasing active deorbit capabilities.

According to Amazon, the next steps involve executing controlled maneuvers using the propulsion systems onboard to bring the satellites back down to Earth. This move is part of the company’s commitment to space safety and sustainability, with plans to deorbit all satellites within a year of mission completion.

During their time in orbit, the satellites achieved a “100% success rate across key mission objectives,” Amazon confirmed. Launched by United Launch Alliance in October, the satellites have showcased impressive capabilities, including two-way video calls and data transfers via onboard optical inter-satellite links.

As Amazon gears up for full-scale deployment of Project Kuiper, satellite manufacturing is already underway at a production facility in Kirkland, Washington. This expansion signals Amazon’s commitment to advancing its satellite internet initiative and ensuring the responsible management of space assets.
