Quantum material enhances solar cell efficiency by 190%

Researchers from Lehigh University have made a breakthrough in solar panel technology by developing a new quantum material that could significantly boost the efficiency of solar cells. This development comes at a time when constant innovations are needed to meet the world’s growing energy demands.

The research team unveiled a prototype that utilizes this quantum material as the active layer in a solar cell. This material demonstrated a photovoltaic absorption rate of 80% and an external quantum efficiency of up to 190%. These results are impressive as they surpass the theoretical limit set by the Shockley-Queisser efficiency for traditional silicon-based solar cells. In comparison, regular solar cells typically have a maximum EQE of 100%.

This new quantum material shows promise in revolutionizing the solar energy industry by enhancing the performance and efficiency of solar panels. As the demand for renewable energy sources continues to grow, innovations like this one could play a crucial role in meeting global energy needs.
