GM Energy has revealed its latest innovation with residential charging kits that can turn an electric vehicle into a generator for your home. This bidirectional power sharing feature allows EV owners to not only charge their vehicles but also power parts of their home during a power outage.
The technology behind these residential charging kits will eventually allow users to integrate their charging kit with solar panels, making it a more environmentally friendly option for powering homes. GM Energy’s goal is to bring a seamless and holistic EV ecosystem to its customers, providing them with the ability to offset energy costs over time and mitigate the impacts of power outages.
Initially compatible with the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV First-Edition RST, which has a 200kWh battery, the residential charger can power an entire house for up to 21 days with reduced daily energy usage. GM plans to expand this compatibility to its entire lineup of Ultium-based vehicles by the 2026 model year.
Customers can control their home charger using GM’s mobile apps, simplifying the management of their battery’s state of charge. The GM Energy V2H Bundle, which includes a charger and a V2H Enablement Kit, is priced at an estimated ,299 before installation or taxes. For those who don’t require the vehicle charger, the V2H Enablement Kit alone costs approximately ,600 before installation and taxes.
