Thousands in Washington to receive free solar power with new federal funding

Washington State has been selected to receive a significant federal grant of 6 million to facilitate new programs aimed at installing rooftop solar systems on numerous homes and apartment buildings. This initiative is part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Solar For All program, which seeks to enhance access to solar energy for low- and moderate-income Americans.

Under the 2022 federal Inflation Reduction Act, this funding will offer subsidies and low-cost financing to assist property owners in overcoming financial barriers to adopting solar energy. Governor Jay Inslee praised Solar For All as a “game changer” and pledged an additional 0 million from the state’s Climate Commitment Act funds to boost solar deployment efforts.

The state Department of Commerce in Washington will utilize the grant to launch four new programs. These programs include providing free rooftop solar installation for homeowners below specific income thresholds, enabling income-qualified renters and tribal members to participate in community solar programs at no cost, offering no-interest, forgivable loans to owners of multifamily buildings for energy efficiency upgrades and solar panel installations, and collaborating with federally recognized tribes on expanding solar projects for residents.

While the exact number of individuals to be served with the federal funds remains unknown, the development and implementation of these programs are estimated to take approximately one year. In an initial grant application, the Department of Commerce requested 0 million to benefit 10,000 households, with a substantial portion receiving solar panels on their homes.

This initiative is a significant step towards making solar energy more accessible and affordable for residents of Washington state, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and combating climate change.
