Understanding the Complexities of Everyday Life in Iran: A Researcher's Insight
Between 2015 and 2018, I dedicated 15 months to exploring the vibrant culture and daily lives of Iranians in Mashhad, the second-largest city in the country. As an anthropologist, my goal was to understand life beyond the political narratives often portrayed in Tehran’s capital, as well as to assess whether the aspirations of the 1979 Revolution still resonate with everyday Iranians, not just political leaders.
My journey began with a stay on a university campus, where I immersed myself in learning Persian. Later, I lived with families from various walks of life, conducting hundreds of interviews that encompassed a wide range of political, social, and religious perspectives. What became abundantly clear from these interactions is the rich tapestry of opinions among the Iranian populace, highlighting the complexities that defy simple categorizations of belief or feeling.
A Diverse Spectrum of Perspectives
During my time in Mashhad, many discussions revolved around Iran’s political climate, particularly in light of recent events. For instance, following strikes initiated by Israel against Iran, there were reports of celebrations among some Iranians regarding the deaths of certain military figures associated with the government. While these reactions were indicative of dissatisfaction with the regime, they do not represent the whole of Iranian sentiment. Many expressed caution about the broader implications of escalating violence.
Surveys, such as one conducted by the GAMAAN Institute, indicated a significant portion of the Iranian population favors reform. Interestingly, approximately 79% of those polled stated they would oppose the current regime in a free referendum. However, these statistics often fail to capture the nuanced relationship many Iranians maintain with their government, oscillating between ideological affiliations and pragmatic agreements.
Moving Beyond Monolithic Narratives
Media portrayals frequently depict the Iranian state as a homogeneous entity, drastically disconnected from the people it governs. Yet, such simplifications overlook the complex interplay between the state and its citizens. Numerous individuals I encountered during my research were state employees, from teachers to university lecturers, who offered differing views on the legacy of the revolution and the country’s trajectory.
For example, one of my Persian instructors chose not to attend official commemorations of the revolution, stating, “We have warm feelings towards America,” while expressing solidarity with pro-Palestinian movements. This ambivalence illustrates the intricate balance many Iranians strike in their civic lives.
In addition, Iran’s population is ethnically and religiously diverse, consisting of Azeris, Kurds, and sizeable Sunni communities alongside its majority Shi’a population. This variety is often stripped away by state propaganda that seeks to present a unified national identity.
The Future of Iran's Political Landscape
The voices of Iranians, both within the country and in the diaspora, highlight that the discourse is far from one-dimensional. Many in the diaspora assert representation for all Iranians based on their own perspectives, further complicating the understanding of national sentiment. It’s vital to recognize that both supporters and critics of the regime exist, each contributing to Iran’s evolving political landscape.
The recent years of civil disobedience and protest demonstrate a growing chasm between the state and a significant segment of the population, particularly among the youth. This disconnect signals that, when reimagining the future political structure of Iran, it must embrace the rich diversity of its people, cultivating a pluralistic society that respects differing opinions and aspirations.
While the Iranian regime has its flaws, including moments of brutality, it is essential to engage in the complex discussions surrounding the country’s future. As outsiders, we need to listen to the voices from within Iran and support the journey toward a more inclusive political environment that reflects the nation’s rich diversity.
As we turn our attention to the intricate narratives and aspirations of Iranian society, let us honor the agency of its citizens in shaping their destiny.
