Satellite texting coming soon for T-Mobile customers, FCC filing shows

T-Mobile customers can look forward to the upcoming launch of satellite texting services, thanks to a partnership between SpaceX and the wireless network provider. Earlier this year, both companies hinted at the readiness of their Direct to Cell service for commercial use, and now it seems that the service will be rolled out this fall.

According to a recent FCC filing by SpaceX, the Direct to Cell service is set to launch in the US this fall. The filing praised the FCC for adopting a flexible regulatory framework for supplemental coverage from space but also requested the commission to consider band-specific limits for a better user experience.

T-Mobile has already confirmed that most phones on its network will be compatible with the satellite messaging service, eliminating the need for additional hardware. The service will utilize Starlink’s satellites to transmit via T-Mobile’s mid-band spectrum, providing coverage in areas where traditional telecommunication services are unavailable.

Initially, the service will only support text messaging, with voice and data services expected to be added next year. Customers can anticipate receiving the satellite messaging feature as part of T-Mobile’s premium packages or at an additional cost on other plans.

SpaceX currently has over 6,000 Starlink satellites in orbit, with plans to deploy nearly 800 satellites capable of direct-to-cell connections in the near future. This extensive satellite network will ensure reliable service and complete coverage for users.

Overall, the collaboration between SpaceX and T-Mobile aims to enhance connectivity and offer more choices to consumers in remote or underserved areas. With the imminent launch of the Direct to Cell service, T-Mobile customers can look forward to staying connected regardless of their location.
