AkzoNobel’s Commitment to Green Power Recognized

AkzoNobel, a company with a long history in the paint and coatings industry dating back to 1792, has made significant strides in its commitment to using renewable energy sources. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership recently recognized AkzoNobel for its use of 69 million kilowatt-hours of green power annually at its manufacturing sites in the U.S.

This achievement was made possible through the purchase of renewable electricity with certificates of origin, which document the generation and supply of one megawatt-hour of electricity through eligible renewable energy resources. The EPA noted that AkzoNobel’s green power usage in 2023 is equivalent to the electricity consumption of over 6,400 average American homes per year.

Wijnand Bruinsma, AkzoNobel’s Global Director of Sustainability, expressed pride in the company’s ambitious goal to reduce its carbon footprint by 50% by 2030. The partnership with the EPA on renewable electricity usage in U.S. manufacturing operations is a key part of this commitment, with the aim of promoting energy transition within AkzoNobel’s value chain and among its customers.

As of 2023, AkzoNobel has already made significant progress in its sustainability efforts, including a 38% reduction in carbon emissions, a 62% usage of renewable electricity in its operations, and 100% renewable electricity in 82 locations. Solar panels are also being utilized at 31 sites as a supplementary energy source. Furthermore, the company has achieved 100% renewable electricity in Europe since January 2022 and in North America since January 2023, along with a 1% reduction in total energy consumption. These initiatives demonstrate AkzoNobel’s commitment to environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.
