Eruption Threatens Galápagos Iguanas

Eruption Threatens Galápagos Iguanas

Fernandina, the youngest of the Galápagos islands, is known for being the most volcanically active. Located on a mantle plume that produced all of the Galápagos islands, the island’s La Cumbre volcano erupts roughly every four years. The most recent eruption began on March 2, 2024, with lava flowing from a circular fissure on the volcano’s southeast flank.

Satellite images captured the eruption’s glow on March 5, showing the intensity of the event. Fernandina, the third largest island in the Galápagos archipelago, lies approximately 1,100 kilometers off the west coast of Ecuador. Lava spilled down the peak of the volcano, creating a striking visual of the natural phenomenon.

Monitoring the eruption from above, Sentinel-1 satellites detected land surface inflation in the volcano’s caldera, indicating magma movement. Abundant thermal anomalies were observed, signaling the movement of lava flows. Sulfur dioxide emissions increased but decreased steadily after the initial eruption, a common pattern in effusive eruptions.

Galápagos volcanoes like Fernandina are known for their rich sulfur dioxide emissions and low ash production due to the low viscosity basaltic magma. Despite the volcanic activity, the eruption seems to be more prolonged than recent events, providing a spectacle for onlookers on passing ships.

While Fernandina is uninhabited and lacks infrastructure at risk, it is home to a diverse population of rare land iguanas. These reptiles, along with other animals on the island, depend on the ecosystem that has been shaped by volcanic activity over the years.

Geologists are closely monitoring the eruption using both aerial and ground-based sensors to understand the event better. The combination of remote sensing and ground-based networks provides valuable insights into the volcanic activity on the island. The ongoing eruption of Fernandina continues to captivate both scientists and nature enthusiasts alike.

‘Otay Mesa Project Receives Approval After Over a Decade of Planning’

San Diego city planners recently granted unanimous approval to Cornerstone Communities for their Candlelight project in Otay Mesa. This development will feature 450 townhouses and is situated near the U.S.-Mexico border in one of the few remaining undeveloped areas of San Diego County.

The project, which had previously received approval, required a new vote due to changes in the unit types. Environmental concerns and the need for mitigation efforts have caused delays in the planning process for approximately 12 years. However, with the recent vote, Cornerstone is looking to begin work on the site in September, with the first homes expected to be ready by late 2025.

Cornerstone’s CEO, Ure Kretowicz, envisions the Candlelight project as workforce housing, with initial cost estimates placing townhouses in the mid-0,000 to low 0,000 price range. Even the highest-priced units will be below the 2,500 median home price recorded in January.

Overall, this development represents an important step in addressing the housing needs of the region, offering a mix of affordability and quality in a rapidly growing area like Otay Mesa.

How Time Management Tools Can Bring Joy and Connection to You

How Time Management Tools Can Bring Joy and Connection to You

Feeling overwhelmed by the demands of work, school, and an internship, 22-year-old Brandon decided to make a change. Seeking to reduce stress, improve his time management, and connect with others, he turned to the Thrive app in December.

Brandon started by creating a schedule in a sketchbook to plan his week ahead. By prioritizing tasks and focusing on high priority assignments in the morning when his mind was fresh, he found tasks easier to accomplish without distractions.

To lower his stress levels, Brandon made sure to carve out time for workouts at the gym every morning. Tracking his progress and listening to EDM for motivation, he found that working out with a friend helped him stay accountable and push himself to do his best.

Instead of opting for fast food, Brandon started planning his meals by prepping healthy options like salmon with veggies or chicken wraps. This saved him time and allowed him to worry less about cooking.

Recognizing the importance of sleep in his busy life, Brandon implemented microsteps like setting a regular bedtime, showering in the evening, and putting his phone away. Getting seven hours of sleep each night helped him feel more recharged in the morning.

With more rest and less stress, Brandon found that he became more creative. He made time for his love of art by drawing and painting mythical creatures and architectural ideas from his imagination.

In addition to focusing on self-care, Brandon also prioritized building connections with friends and coworkers. By spending time together at the gym, playing Topgolf, and learning from older coworkers about their life experiences, he gained valuable guidance and perspective.

Through the Thrive Challenge, Brandon learned to motivate himself, hold himself accountable, and trust his intuition. By creating a routine that he enjoyed, he felt proud of his progress and excited about his future.
