CEO of Banner Health to retire, successor announced

After an impressive tenure spanning nearly a quarter of a century, Peter S. Fine, the CEO of Banner Health, has announced his retirement. Fine, who has been at the helm of Banner Health since 2000, is recognized for spearheading the organization’s transformation into one of the largest secular nonprofit health systems in the country.

Banner Health, headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, operates 30 acute care hospitals, three rehab hospitals, and a health plan covering 1.2 million lives across six states. With over billion in revenue, Banner Health stands as Arizona’s largest private employer.

Amy Perry, currently the President and Chief Operating Officer of Banner Health, has been named as Fine’s successor. Perry, who joined Banner Health in November 2021, played a crucial role in the system’s recovery from the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. With more than 30 years of experience in healthcare, Perry’s leadership has been instrumental in navigating the system through turbulent times.

Anne Mariucci, the Chairwoman of Banner’s board of directors, expressed confidence in Perry’s capabilities, describing her as the “ideal leader” for the organization. Perry, in turn, emphasized her commitment to leveraging technology and innovation to enhance patient care and accessibility to healthcare services.

Fine, upon his retirement, will also step down from Banner’s board and assume the role of CEO emeritus until January 2025. He commended Perry for her achievements and expressed his enthusiasm for collaborating with her to ensure a seamless transition of leadership.

Banner Health, which employs over 55,000 individuals, received an “AA-” rating from Fitch Ratings, underscoring its strong financial standing and integrated delivery system. Despite the challenges faced by many healthcare organizations during the pandemic, Banner Health remained profitable in the 2022 fiscal year.

As Perry prepares to assume the role of CEO, she is determined to uphold Banner Health’s commitment to safety, quality care, and community service. With a focus on technology-driven solutions and patient-centered approaches, Perry aims to lead Banner Health towards continued success and growth in the healthcare landscape.
