‘Efforts to reintroduce Pine Marten in Kent and Sussex gain traction’

Plans to reintroduce the Pine Marten to Kent and Sussex are picking up steam with the launch of a public consultation. The Pine Marten Restoration Project, a collaboration between Kent Wildlife Trust, the Wildwood Trust, Sussex Wildlife Trust, Ashdown Forest, and Forestry England, aims to engage with the public about releasing the mustelid at selected sites in both counties.

Successful reintroductions of Pine Martens in other regions have sparked interest, with recent research indicating a population in the New Forest. Furthermore, a camera-trap record in London has raised speculation about the mammal’s possible presence in parts of Sussex.

Feasibility studies have already been conducted, with more underway, and potential sites have been identified. In the case of Covert Wood in Kent, efforts are being made to safeguard the location. The project is actively seeking public input to gather opinions.

Matt Phelps, the species recovery officer for Sussex Wildlife Trust, emphasized the importance of local engagement for the project’s success. He urged individuals with questions, concerns, or an interest in volunteering to get involved and provide their feedback. The reintroduction of Pine Martens in the South-East is an exciting development that could have a positive impact on the local ecosystem.
