Link approaching Lynnwood, Community Transit considers eliminating commuter fare

Community Transit in Everett is making changes to its commuter bus fares in response to the introduction of light rail into Snohomish County. The agency is looking to eliminate the .50 commuter bus fare as part of its Transit Changes in 2024 and Beyond plan.

The plan, which was adopted last year, includes discontinuing Community Transit’s routes to downtown Seattle and Northgate with the addition of light rail to Lynnwood. This means that the commuter routes will no longer be necessary, and the extra fare can be dropped.

Sophie Luthin, a strategic planning manager with Community Transit, stated at a recent board meeting that with the new express routes operating within Snohomish County, there is no longer a justification for a premium fare. Regular bus fares, Zip Alderwood fares, and DART Paratransit fares will remain at .50, with reduced fares for Community Transit buses and the Zip Alderwood shuttle set at .50. Additionally, teenagers and younger individuals ride for free.

These changes come as transit agencies in the area adjust to the arrival of light rail in late August. Community Transit’s decision to drop the commuter bus fare reflects their commitment to providing affordable and accessible transportation options for residents.
