“Most consumers now prefer using mobile phones for payments, according to survey”

A recent survey conducted by ABI Research on behalf of the NFC Forum revealed that over 80% of respondents have utilized a smartphone or smartwatch to make contactless payments. More than half of those who made mobile contactless payments expressed a preference for using their mobile devices over traditional cards. In fact, 95% of participants admitted to leaving their physical wallets at home at least once in favor of solely relying on mobile payments, with 53% doing so multiple times per week.

The NFC Forum emphasized in the study that consumers rated NFC contactless as the most secure, convenient, reliable, and easiest payment method compared to other options like contactless cards, QR codes, or cash. The study, which included participants from nine countries such as the US, the UK, France, and China, highlighted a significant shift in consumer behavior towards embracing digital payment solutions.

Andrew Zignani, research director at ABI Research, noted that there is a growing trend of daily use of mobile payment platforms due to the perceived security, reliability, and convenience offered by digital solutions. Furthermore, as awareness and understanding of NFC technology increases, there is a rising demand for additional applications beyond just payments.

Mike McCamon, executive director of the NFC Forum, emphasized the versatility of NFC technology in creating efficient, reliable, secure, and environmentally-friendly solutions. With emerging concepts like multi-purpose tap, which streamlines multiple actions in a single transaction, there is potential for transformative solutions across various industries such as access control, digital identity, transport, and sustainability requirements.

Overall, the study indicates a shift towards a more digital and NFC-centric payment landscape, with users embracing the convenience and security offered by mobile payment technologies. This trend highlights the potential for NFC technology to expand beyond traditional payment applications into various innovative use cases.
