Passkey support is being introduced for iPhone users on WhatsApp.

WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging platform owned by Meta, has started rolling out passkey support for iPhone users. This feature has been in testing for some time and was already available for Android users since October.

According to reports from Engadget, iPhone owners now have the option to use passkeys on WhatsApp. The rollout has begun, but it may take a few weeks for all users to have access to this new security feature, as WhatsApp tends to gradually make new features available to its users.

Alice Newton-Rex, WhatsApp’s head of product, emphasized that passkey verification will make signing into WhatsApp easier and more secure. It provides an additional layer of security for users, enhancing their privacy and protection.

To enable passkeys on their WhatsApp account, users can open the app, go to Settings, tap on Account, and then select Passkeys. By choosing Create Passkey, users can start the passkey creation process, which will require either Face ID or Touch ID confirmation.

Passkeys, developed by the FIDO Alliance in collaboration with Apple and Google, offer a more secure alternative to traditional username and password combinations. This biometric system uses facial recognition or fingerprint scanning for authentication, replacing outdated methods of login verification.
