‘Women’s Institute Earns Top Recognition from National Accrediting Organization’

Tampa General Hospital’s Women’s Institute Awarded Highest Maternal Care Designation

Tampa General Hospital’s Women’s Institute has been recognized with the prestigious Level IV Maternal Care designation by The Joint Commission, a leading healthcare accreditation body. This designation highlights the hospital’s dedication to providing top-quality care for mothers and babies.

John Couris, president and CEO of Tampa General, expressed pride in the exceptional care provided by the hospital’s physicians and team members to expectant mothers. He emphasized the importance of a healthy start for families to ensure lifelong well-being. Couris credited the Level IV Maternal Care recognition to the team’s commitment to excellence in patient care and clinical research, making Tampa General a trusted choice for world-class healthcare.

Tampa General is among only seven hospitals in Florida and 33 birthing hospitals nationwide to receive this distinguished Level IV Maternal Care designation. This recognition assures patients that they can expect the highest quality care even during complex medical situations, as stated by Charles J. Lockwood, MD, MHCM, executive vice president of USF Health and dean of the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine.

The hospital’s comprehensive care for women, from conception to delivery and postpartum, was acknowledged by Judette Louis, MD, MPH, chief of the TGH Women’s Institute. Louis emphasized the focus on providing world-class care for mothers regardless of their medical condition complexity.

The designation system set by The Joint Commission includes four tiers, with Level IV representing Regional Perinatal Health Care Centers that offer the most advanced care for complex maternal conditions. Melissa Golombek, DNP, vice president of the TGH Women’s Institute, expressed her gratitude for the recognition and reiterated the hospital’s commitment to providing safe delivery experiences for every mother and baby.

Tampa General’s Women’s Institute offers a wide range of women’s health services, from routine obstetrics and gynecology to specialized maternal-fetal medicine and neonatal care. The hospital’s status as a high-risk obstetrics leader ensures access to top-tier care in every medical subspecialty, delivering over 7,000 babies last year.

Earlier recognitions, such as being named a 2024 High-Performing Hospital for Maternity Care by U.S. News & World Report, further solidify Tampa General’s reputation for excellence in maternity care. Blue Distinction Center+ for Maternity Care designation from Blue Cross Blue Shield in 2023 also highlighted the institute’s commitment to providing outstanding care for women and infant patient populations.
