Exploring Potential for Offshore Wind Hub in the Baltic Sea

RWE and Port of Karlshamn in Sweden have joined forces to explore the potential of developing the port as an offshore wind hub in the Baltic region. The collaboration aims to establish logistics hubs for offshore wind farms, creating employment opportunities and contributing to economic development.

The companies have recently signed a memorandum of understanding to assess whether Port of Karlshamn could serve as a suitable harbor for logistics, installation, operations, and maintenance activities for offshore wind projects developed by RWE in the Baltic Sea. The first step of this partnership involves mapping out the requirements and investments needed to expand the port’s capacity.

RWE’s Vice President for Offshore Wind, Matilda Machacek, emphasized the importance of port capacity and a sustainable supply chain in the successful deployment of offshore wind projects. She believes that transforming the port into a dynamic hub could lead to growth, infrastructure development, job creation, and other economic benefits.

Port of Karlshamn’s CEO, Caroline Säfström, highlighted the port’s strategic location with a natural deep harbor and a large shipyard which positions it well to meet the future demands of the offshore wind industry. By establishing itself as an offshore wind hub, the port can not only support the industry’s needs but also generate employment opportunities in the region and stimulate business growth for local companies and suppliers.

This collaboration between RWE and Port of Karlshamn is a significant step towards maximizing the potential of offshore wind energy in the Baltic and boosting economic development in the area.
