‘Metocean Needs Assessment Contracted for Canadian Offshore Wind’

Canada is set to develop windfarms offshore Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Labrador as part of the country’s clean energy and climate objectives. The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) is overseeing regional assessments for offshore wind projects in these regions.

In line with this, Venterra Group Plc has been awarded a contract to assess metocean data collection requirements for the development of offshore windfarms off Canada’s Atlantic coast. Nova Scotia is aiming to offer seabed leases for up to 5 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030.

Venterra Geoscience will analyze existing metocean data, identify any gaps, and propose optimized data collection approaches. The goal is to outline all necessary metocean data to support offshore wind development in Atlantic Canada, focusing on regions like Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Labrador.

Lee Gooderham, director of Venterra Geoscience, highlighted that their work is a crucial step in Canada’s energy transition. The insights gained will support various initiatives, from field measurement campaigns to advanced numerical modeling, and research and development efforts to promote responsible and sustainable offshore wind deployment in the country.

Ventilation system made from fossil-free steel installed by Lindab for Castellum

Lindab, a leading ventilation company in Europe, is teaming up with Castellum on a renovation project in Stockholm, Sweden, to use duct systems made of fossil-free steel. This collaboration marks Lindab as the first ventilation company worldwide to receive a pilot delivery of fossil-free steel from SSAB. By opting for fossil-free ventilation ducts, Castellum is making significant strides in reducing the project’s climate impact during the refurbishing process.

Castellum, a property owner, recognizes that a significant portion of their climate impact stems from construction projects. To address this, the company is prioritizing the use of climate-efficient methods, products, and materials in both renovations and new construction projects. In renovation projects specifically, technical installations, including the ventilation system, contribute 50-80 percent of the overall climate impact.

The selected property in Stockholm, built in the 1960s, will now feature duct systems made of fossil-free material with comparable technical properties and the highest tightness class. This decision aligns with Castellum’s commitment to reduce its climate impact. The property is expected to be ready for tenant occupancy by June 2024.

Björn Röber, Head of Property Management Projects at Castellum in the Stockholm region, expressed satisfaction with the collaboration with Lindab, highlighting the opportunity to further reduce climate impact in installation projects. Ola Ringdahl, President and CEO of Lindab, emphasized the importance of such partnerships in mitigating climate impact, praising Castellum’s commitment to sustainability.

The fossil-free steel used in the project is sourced from SSAB and produced using the HYBRIT® technology. Lindab, as a selected partner, has privileged access to a pilot delivery, allowing them to supply products made from fossil-free steel ahead of the planned regular production beginning in 2026. Lindab also offers ventilation ducts in recycled steel as part of its standard range.

Lindab’s innovative approach to utilizing fossil-free steel in ventilation systems demonstrates its dedication to sustainability and environmental responsibility. The collaboration with Castellum underscores the potential for reducing climate impact in construction projects while promoting a healthier indoor environment.

The UAE-Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund (UAE-CREF) has announced the completion of a hurricane-resistant power project in Antigua and Barbuda developed by Masdar. In the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma in 2017, which forced Barbuda’s residents to seek refuge in Antigua, a climate-resistant power plant has been inaugurated on Barbuda.

This innovative project, designed to withstand winds of up to 265 km per hour, combines solar, battery, and backup diesel technologies to ensure a safe and reliable power supply for the island. The Green Barbuda project, part of Antigua and Barbuda’s goal to achieve 86 percent renewable energy by 2030, received full financing from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development as part of the US million UAE-CREF initiative.

Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director-General of ADFD, commended the success of UAE-CREF in driving the energy transformation in Antigua and Barbuda, reducing the country’s dependence on fossil fuel imports. Sultan Al Shamsi, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, praised the project for contributing to sustainable development in the Caribbean and aligning with the UAE’s commitment to foreign aid and climate action.

The CEO of Masdar, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, emphasized the project’s role in providing clean energy and supporting economic growth in Antigua and Barbuda. The project, featuring a hybrid solar PV plant connected to a battery, is capable of fully meeting the island’s daytime energy demand, reducing diesel consumption and cutting carbon dioxide emissions.

The UAE-CREF initiative aims to deploy renewable energy projects across 16 Caribbean countries in three cycles, with successful projects already launched in the Bahamas, Barbados, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. This initiative not only reduces energy costs and increases access to clean energy but also enhances climate resilience in the region.

Zhoushan Xinya Shipyard recently hosted a steel cutting ceremony for the groundbreaking 14,000 TEU Maersk Halifax methanol dual fuel retrofit project on March 8, 2024. This significant event marks the world’s first container vessel methanol dual fuel retrofit.

Attended by representatives from Maersk project team, ABS, and various company leaders and employees, the ceremony highlighted the innovative steps being taken in the maritime industry. The Maersk Halifax is expected to arrive at the shipyard in early July for conversion and repair works that will span over approximately three months.

To ensure the seamless execution of the project, Zhoushan Xinya Shipyard has erected a 500-ton gantry crane above the No.3 dock. Furthermore, the yard is equipped with a range of state-of-the-art cutting machines and welding equipment to support the retrofitting process.

In collaboration with MAN Energy Solutions, Maersk has signed an agreement for the engine retrofit as part of the project. Additionally, new fuel tanks, a fuel preparation room, and a fuel supply system will also be installed during the retrofitting process.

Ant Group Boosts Transaction Limits for International Travellers to Enhance Payment Services

Ant Group has recently announced a significant increase in transaction limits for international travellers utilizing its cross-border payment services. The single-transaction limit has been raised from US,000 to US,000, while the annual cumulative transaction limit has also seen a jump from US,000 to US,000. This move aligns with China’s latest policies aimed at simplifying international visits.

The updated policies will impact Ant’s twin cross-border mobile payment solutions, Alipay and Alipay+. International travellers can now ‘pay like a local’ by downloading the Alipay app, linking their international cards, or using their home wallets. Through Alipay+, 10 e-wallets worldwide connect travellers to a merchant network in China with 80 million establishments.

These changes follow recent policy adjustments from China. The State Council of China released guidelines on March 7th, 2024, to streamline payment services and enhance convenience for international visitors. The People’s Bank of China also directed payment platforms to raise transaction limits for foreign nationals.

The measures aim to facilitate international transactions in anticipation of increased travel to China, driven by new visa-free policies and expanded flight routes. During Chinese New Year in 2024, Alipay reported a 500% increase in spending via international card-enabled accounts at Chinese merchants compared to the previous year.

In September 2023, Ant International introduced the Alipay+-in-China (A+ China) Program, allowing Asian e-wallets to operate in mainland China. This led to a 47-fold increase in transactions within a six-month period.

CEOs of various e-wallets across Asia have expressed optimism about this development. Alan Ni, CEO of TNG Digital Sdn. Bhd, sees it as a significant step towards global payment convenience, enhancing users’ travel and shopping experiences. John Sun, CEO of Macao’s MPay, believes the policy will boost economic development in the Greater Bay Area and improve payment experiences for international tourists. Naranbat Battulga, Founder and Chairman of Hipay LLC, highlighted the increased transaction limits’ value, providing convenience to end users paying over US,000 per transaction.
